Keeping Teenagers Safe Online – Cyberbullying

Good afternoon, 

This week, The Folkestone Academy has welcomed me into the school to deliver assemblies to students across all year groups on the subject of cyberbullying and online safety. The presentations focus on young people's responsibilities online and cover the use of text messaging platforms, social media applications, including WhatsApp, Snapchat, TikTok and YouTube, as well as online gaming chatrooms.

We are discussing the importance of respectful online behaviour and the serious impact that cyberbullying can have on its victims. Cyberbullying can leave people feeling overwhelmed, embarrassed, distressed and isolated. It can damage self-esteem, negatively affect mental health and, in the most serious cases, contribute to self-harm and suicidal thoughts.

Students are also being made aware of the legislation available to help protect people online, including the Malicious Communications Act 1988 and the Protection from Harassment Act 1997. They are reminded that online abuse, threats and persistent unwanted communications can constitute criminal offences and may result in police intervention.

Students are encouraged to think carefully about their online interactions, consider the lasting impact their words and actions can have on others, and understand the importance of reporting any form of online bullying, harassment or threatening behaviour. We have discussed, and will continue to discuss, the importance of challenging unacceptable behaviour within our own friendship groups and supporting those who may be affected by cyberbullying. By speaking up and promoting positive online behaviour, young people can play an important role in creating safer and more respectful online communities.

We encourage parents, carers and guardians to have regular conversations with the young people in their care about staying safe online. Open and honest discussions can help them recognise risks, make responsible choices and feel confident about seeking support if they encounter any problems.
